Patios, walkways and driveways are built to handle everyday use and constant exposure to the elements. Over time, even a well-built paver surface can begin to show its age through dirt, fading, stains, shifting, loose pavers, uneven areas and general wear.
Three Surfaces. Different Demands.
A patio, walkway and driveway may all be built with pavers, but they do not experience the same kind of use. Understanding how each surface is used helps determine the care it may need.
Patios
Patios are part of the spaces where people gather, relax and spend time outdoors. Appearance matters, but regular exposure and everyday use can also affect joints, pavers and the overall condition of the surface.
Walkways
Walkways see repeated foot traffic and connect the spaces around a property. Shifting, settling or loose pavers can leave sections looking uneven and may signal that targeted repair or re-leveling should be considered.
Driveways
Paver driveways handle vehicle traffic along with constant outdoor exposure. Over time, staining, joint deterioration and visible surface wear can affect the appearance and condition of the driveway.
The surface may be made from the same material, but the way it is used matters. ACE evaluates the existing condition and recommends care based on what that particular hardscape needs.
What ACE Can Do For Your Pavers
Every paver surface ages differently. ACE can address individual problem areas or combine services when a patio, walkway or driveway needs more complete care. The right approach depends on the condition of the existing surface.
Cleaning
Remove built-up dirt, grime and surface discoloration to refresh the appearance of existing pavers and prepare them for additional care when needed.
Cleaning & SealingSealing
Apply an appropriate sealer to help protect properly prepared pavers while enhancing or preserving the finished appearance of the surface.
Cleaning & SealingRepair
Address loose, shifted or damaged areas of an existing paver surface when targeted repairs can help preserve the surrounding hardscape.
Repair & Re-LevelingRe-Leveling
Reset and re-level appropriate areas where pavers have settled, shifted or become uneven over time.
Repair & Re-LevelingJoint Re-Sanding
Replenish joint sand when existing joints have lost material as part of the preparation and restoration process where appropriate.
Hardscape RestorationRestoration
Combine the services an existing hardscape needs, which may include cleaning, repair, re-leveling, re-sanding and sealing depending on its condition.
Hardscape RestorationNot every surface needs every service. ACE evaluates the condition of the existing hardscape and focuses on what your pavers actually need.
When Your Pavers Start Showing Their Age
Time, traffic and outdoor exposure can change the appearance and condition of a paver surface. Some problems are primarily cosmetic, while others may indicate that cleaning, repair, re-leveling, re-sanding or more complete restoration should be considered.
Staining & Discoloration
Dirt, spills and outdoor exposure can leave visible staining or discoloration across the paver surface.
Faded Appearance
Weather and continued exposure can leave once-vibrant pavers looking dull, tired or faded.
Moss & Organic Growth
Organic growth can collect on and around pavers, changing the appearance of the hardscape over time.
Missing Joint Sand
Joint material can gradually diminish, leaving joints visibly low or in need of re-sanding.
Sunken Pavers
Individual areas can settle below the surrounding surface and may benefit from targeted repair and re-leveling.
Loose Pavers
Pavers that no longer feel secure may need to be reset as part of a targeted repair.
Uneven Areas
Shifting or settling can create noticeable height differences across sections of the existing paver surface.
General Weathering
Years of use and exposure can leave a hardscape looking worn even when there is not one single obvious problem.
Seeing signs of age does not automatically mean the hardscape needs to be replaced. The first step is understanding what is actually happening with the existing surface.
Restore Instead Of Starting Over
Worn, faded or uneven pavers do not automatically mean the entire hardscape needs to be replaced. Depending on the condition of the existing surface, restoration may address the areas that need attention while preserving the hardscape that is still in serviceable condition.
See What Can Be Restored.
An aging patio, walkway or driveway can have more than one issue at the same time. Rather than assuming the entire surface has reached the end of its life, ACE can evaluate its condition and determine whether targeted restoration is appropriate.
Restoration is not the right answer for every hardscape. The condition of the pavers, surrounding areas and underlying problems all matter. Some surfaces may require more extensive work or replacement rather than restoration.
The goal is not to promise that every surface can be saved. It is to determine whether there is a practical way to restore what you already have before starting over.
A Closer Look At The Surfaces We Restore
Existing paver surfaces face different kinds of traffic, exposure and wear depending on how they are used. ACE works with paver patios, walkways and driveways to address the condition of each surface and determine the restoration work it needs.
Paver Patios
A paver patio is often one of the most visible and frequently used hardscape areas around a home. Weather, foot traffic, outdoor furniture and everyday use can gradually affect both its appearance and condition.
- Dirt, staining and discoloration
- Faded or weathered appearance
- Missing or deteriorated joint sand
- Loose, shifted or uneven pavers
Paver Walkways
Paver walkways connect the spaces around a property and experience repeated foot traffic throughout their life. Settling, shifting and general exposure can leave sections looking worn or noticeably uneven.
- Sunken or uneven sections
- Loose or shifting pavers
- Organic growth and surface buildup
- Worn joints and weathered appearance
Paver Driveways
Paver driveways experience vehicle traffic in addition to the weather and outdoor exposure affecting other hardscape areas. That combination can make staining, joint wear and visible surface deterioration especially noticeable over time.
- Vehicle-related staining and buildup
- Joint sand loss or deterioration
- Settled, shifted or uneven areas
- Fading and general surface wear
Patios, walkways and driveways may share the same basic materials, but they do not always need the same treatment. ACE approaches each existing surface based on how it is used and what condition it is in.
Not Sure What Your Surface Needs?
You do not need to know whether your pavers need cleaning, sealing, repair or a more complete restoration before contacting ACE. The first step is looking at the existing surface and understanding what condition it is actually in.
Assess First. Recommend Second.
Different problems call for different solutions. ACE evaluates the condition of the pavers and the visible issues affecting the surface before recommending the services that may be appropriate.
Mostly Appearance Issues
A patio that is structurally in good condition but looks dirty, faded or weathered may primarily need cleaning and sealing.
Uneven Or Shifted Areas
A walkway with sunken, loose or uneven pavers may need repair or re-leveling before other surface care is considered.
Several Problems At Once
A driveway or patio showing a combination of wear, joint loss, uneven areas and discoloration may call for a broader restoration approach.
The goal is not to sell every service to every surface. It is to identify the work that makes sense for the pavers you already have.
Patios, Walkways & Driveways FAQ
Every existing paver surface is a little different. Here are answers to some common questions about restoring and caring for paver patios, walkways and driveways.
01
Can old pavers be restored?
In many cases, yes. Age alone does not necessarily mean a paver surface needs to be replaced. Depending on its condition, cleaning, repair, re-leveling, joint re-sanding, sealing or a combination of services may help restore the existing hardscape. Some surfaces may have deterioration or underlying problems that make more extensive work or replacement the better option.
02
Can uneven pavers be repaired without replacing everything?
Often, uneven or sunken areas can be addressed with targeted repair and re-leveling rather than replacing the entire paver surface. Whether that approach is appropriate depends on the extent of the problem and the condition of the surrounding hardscape.
03
Can you clean and seal an existing paver driveway?
Yes, existing paver driveways can be candidates for professional cleaning and sealing. ACE first considers the condition of the driveway because loose, shifted, sunken or otherwise damaged areas may need attention before the surface is prepared for sealing.
04
How do I know whether my pavers need repair or just cleaning?
If the main concerns are dirt, staining, discoloration or a weathered appearance, cleaning may be the primary need. If pavers are loose, shifted, sunken or uneven, repair or re-leveling may need to be addressed first. ACE assesses the existing condition before recommending a service.
05
Do all paver surfaces need the same type of treatment?
No. A patio, walkway and driveway can experience very different types of traffic, exposure and wear. The appropriate treatment also depends on the condition of the individual surface. ACE evaluates what the existing pavers actually need rather than assuming the same process is right for every hardscape.
Still not sure what your pavers need? You do not have to diagnose the problem yourself. ACE can evaluate the existing surface and help determine what makes sense for your hardscape.
Bring Your Existing Pavers Back To Life.
If your patio, walkway or driveway is looking worn, stained, uneven or weathered, ACE can assess the existing surface and help determine whether cleaning, sealing, repair, re-leveling or restoration is the right next step.
